Haast may have expressed a hope to publish the ‘very remarkable coloured sketches’ by the Nelson artist John Gully that accompanied his paper read to the Royal Geographical Society in London on 8 February 1864 (Haast [1864]), that the Society’s President, Sir Roderick Murchison, ’earnestly hoped … will soon be published’. However, publication did not proceed. See Paul (1978).
