From Henry Laurie to Ferdinand von Mueller   16 May 1866

16 May/66

Sir,

As the Boro' Council of WBool understand that a number of plants are to be this month distributed among public bodies who apply for them, I am directed to make application, on their behalf, for a supply of young trees & shrubs of a hardy nature, suited to this locality. It is intended to plant them in the reserves adjoining the public buildings in the town.1

On hearing from you, the Council will commission some one in Melbourne to take delivery.

I may be permitted to suggest that some of the plants might consist of young maritime pines, or of shrubs wh wd2 grow well in a very sandy soil. Some of these might be planted, by way of experiment, in the sand wh is spreading in the vicinity of the town, with the view of ascertaining to what extent the encroachment might be stopped by planting more extensively.

I have &c

H. L.
