Melbourne botan. Garden,
18/5/66.
Sir
In reply to your letter of the 16 Inst. I have the honor to inform you that any morning at 9 in May the plants desired by the Warnambool Municipality will be supplied to a duely authorized Agent, it being understood that all arrangements for planting are completed, as maritime pines cannot be transferred readily from one locality to the other if for several days left out of the ground. It would be necessary that the planting of the pines &c be entrusted to a thorough competent gardener & that they are kept well sheltered for a while
Obediently yr

Laurie replied on 22 May, informing M that he had made the necessary arrangements to receive the plants on 29 May (H. Laurie to M, 22 May 1866 (in this edition as 66-05-22a)). On the same day, he wrote to G. Lempriere, Melbourne, requesting him to 'take the trouble of employing some one conversant with gardening, to go to the Botanical Gardens on Tuesday next, the 29th, at 9 a.m., to take delivery of a supply of plants wh have been promised to the Boro' Council by Dr Mueller. Form of authority is enclosed. After receiving the plants & packing them sufficiently, the person employed will send them to us by the steamer wh leaves Melbourne for WBool that morning.' (Letter copy book 3, pp. 35-6).
For summaries of this letter see the Council's Minute book 6, p. 266, and Warrnambool examiner, 5 June 1866, p. 2.
