My dear Sir,
I send you by this mail a chart with the bearings of the Leichhardt River laid down upon it as taken by me in my last trip to the Gulf.1 I trust it may be of some interest to you as it was hitherto unknown.
I send you some seed which I gathered between the Norman & Gilbert Rivers,2 the tree3 grows 15 to 20 feet high, the leaf exactly like an accacia but of a very dark green color, the seed grows in a pod like a bean. I quite omitted to bring the leaf. The tree I have seen before but this was the first time I could obtain any of the seed.
I am my dear Sir
Yours faithfully
J. G. MacDonald

An asterisk has been inserted at this point, presumably referring to a MS annotation by M: 'Adenanthera abrosperma F. M. Fragm. phyt. Austr. V, 30'.

MS annotated by A. Petermann: 'Erh. 24. Sept. 1866' [Received 24 Sept. 1866]. This letter was forwarded by M to Petermann, presumably with his letter of 27 July 1866 (in this edition as 66-07-22b); though the enclosure is not mentioned in M's letter, the two items have the same arrival date annotated on them by Petermann.
