Melbourne im botanischen Garten
27/7/66
Edler Freund.
Stets verehrungsvoll Ihr
Ferd Mueller.
Melbourne Botanic Garden,
27 July 1866.
Noble friend,
This time it is my sad duty to report to you the sudden death of the courageous, experienced, yet still youthful McIntyre.2 The enclosed printed papers3 will inform you of the details of this sorrowful event, but also about the hopes, that are connected with it. The decision, under what conditions the enterprise is to be continued, will not have been made before the departure of this month's mail. However, the ladies are determined to have the search4 continued, and already yesterday I have sent telegraph messages on behalf of the ladies to the temporary commander,5 to hold himself in readiness for further field operations. I believe, the arrangements for the reorganisation of the party will have been sorted out already by next week.
I am sending £10/-/- as my own private contribution for the North Pole expedition.6 How truly gallantly you have fought this enterprise through, and with what a superabundant wealth of knowledge! I shall give a lecture to the German Club in Melbourne on the subject of this fine exploration,7 based on your wonderful essay, received with the last mail.8 Perhaps this will lead to a polar expedition in the South.
Always respectfully your
Ferd. Mueller.
