From Ferdinand von Mueller to Ronald Gunn   12 Sep 1866

12/9/66

This mail, dear Mr Gunn, brought out the proof of the 3 vol of the flora of Australia, in which my genus Gunnia takes now permanently its place between Aizoon & Sesuvium in Ficoideae.1 The genus will also be inserted in the 2 vol. of Benth & Hook fil Genera, now in print.2 Bentham has just described a second species of Gunnia from West Australia, G. Drummondii.3

It was impossible to keep up the orchid genus & Professor Reichenbach has confirmed my view, that it should merge into Sarcochilus.4 The species bears however the name of Sarcochilus Gunnii It is lately found on a second locality in Victoria.

Pray have you a specimen of Oenothera Tasmanica? I suppose ripe fruit of Pultenaea diffusa and of Acradenia Frankliniae are not within your reach.

I am with cordial regards yr

Lindley (1829-47), vol. 20, third unnumbered page under t.1699, had named an orchid species as Gunnia australis, but H. G. L. Reichenbach (1861-4), vol. 6, part 4, p. 501 (issued 1863 (TL2)) and M, B59.02.03, p. 90, had reduced it to Sarcochilus, S. australis for Reichenbach, S. gunnii for M.
