From Ferdinand von Mueller to Henry C. Manners-Sutton   26 Sep 1866

Melbourne bot Garden,

26/9/66

Dear Mr Manners-Sutton.

Her Ladyship desired me to send a package of seeds for the bot. Garden of Trinidad, with the view of causing it to be forwarded by this mail.

I have put together all the kinds available at this season & comprising such species, as will likely endure the humid heat of that island. My collector in North East Australia1 is instructed to secure seeds there and of these, as yielding plants more particularly adapted to a hot insular clime a share shall be forwarded to his Excellency, if Sir Henry will be pleased to cause them to be transmitted to Trinidad. When I had the honor of waiting on the Governor I expressed a particular desire to obtain for Australia the Cassava-plants (Manihot utilissima & Manihot Aipi), and it would be a great triumph if through his Excellencys kind mediation these valuable alimentary plants could be brought to these shores. Through the transmission of roots in glass-cases would be the most advisable & safe means of obtaining the plant, we might secure its possession perhaps also through seeds if fresh collected & speedily sent

With most friendly regards

Ferd. Mueller2

Manihot Aipi
