From Ferdinand von Mueller to Robert Brough Smyth   7 Oct 1866

7/10/66

At last, dear Mr Smyth, I redeem my promise of bestowing your name on some noble tree of Australia as a permanent record also in phytographical science of your valued labours in this country.1 The tree is a very umbrageous one, & the flowers are very fragrant. The genus Villaresia has only one other Australian species, described by me a few years ago,2 & one species in Java, one in the Samoan Group & a few in Chili & Peru.

With most friendly regards

Ferd. Mueller

I have sent the diagnosis of your Villaresia to the press for the 5. vol of my fragmenta, which will appear before the end of the year.3

Villaresia

Villaresia smythii (B66.10.01, p. 156).

Villaresia moorei; see M to J. Hooker 24 January 1862 (in this edition as 62-01-24c), and the specimen K000700071, which has M's label 'Villaresia Moorei F.Muell | Clarence river | Moore', and is evidently the one cited in Bentham (1863-78), vol. 1, p. 396.

MS plant label attached to this letter: 'Villaresia smythii | Ferd. Mueller | Rockingham's Bay'.
