To Joseph Hooker   23 March 1867

2[3]/3/67

I received, dear Dr Hooker, the valuable index to the plants sent away from Kew, also in good condition back all the Compositae I had forwarded for Benthams Work. I have commenced packing to Goodeniaceae for the Wellesley, to sail in a week, but missed the Yorkshire last week on account of great pressure of work.1

I am pleased to see the plate of Curcuma.2 I had the plant from Rockingham's Bay in the collection, but did not wish to describe it as yet, as the specimens were not good. The late W. S. M'leay told me as early as 1857 that a Curcuma from Cape York had flowered in his garden. My Messenger unfortunately forwarded not the order for the case pr Great Britain. Pray give good instructions about the Box at Liverpool, as the box is not on the manifest & might get lost. In the case pr. Wellesley will be some Euphorbiaceae again, which I t[rust] you will send t[o]3 Prof Baillon with your usual kindness.

Have you taken notice that Lunasia is placed by J Mueller in Rutaceae & Goughia in Ilicineae4

Hooker figured and described Curcuma australasica in Curtis's botanical magazine (1867), vol. 93, t. 5620.
editorial additions — MS damaged.
J. Müller (1866) p. 1257 lists both Lunasia and Goughia as 'Genera Exclusa'. M’s letter ends three-quarters of the way down the page, without valediction.
