From Ferdinand von Mueller to Philip Sclater   [Aug 1867]1

This peculiar Parrot was presented to me by Mr Ryan, on whose sheep-station, on the Gawler Ranges west of Spencer Gulf,2 it was obtained. The most extraordinary circumstance connected with this bird, is, that it is nocturnal! It lives in the rocky caves of the ranges, and comes out at night to feed.

Letter not found. The text given here is from the report of the meeting of the Zoological Society of London, 28 November 1867, Proceedings of the Zoological Society of London, 1867, p. 891. The letter is dated on the basis that the Essex, the ship that carried the bird, was ‘cleared out’ of Melbourne on 29 August (Argus, 30 August 1867, p. 4, col. a).
