To George Bentham   21 August 1867

Bot garden 21/8/67.

I send you, dear Mr Bentham, Box 33 by the Great Britain under the obliging care of the Captain, & through the kindess of Mess. Bright freight free. This consignment continues the Epacrideae, but I have still seven fascicles of capsular Epacrideae left, which the box would not take, though a large one. You have however now all the drupaceous Epacrideae.

This box contains.

I have added again a small parcel with supplemental Euphorbiaceae for Prof Baillon. These were with Suppl. Goodeniaceae obtained since my last sending. I shall ask Prof Baillon to send not to me but to you back the Euphorbiaceae as you will need them soon.1 I should however be obliged, if you would work them up soon after arrival, as I am already 1 year without these plants at great inconvenience. J Müller & Baillon having carefully analysed them your review would be an easy & speedy one of these plants.

I return immediately to the coast to regain my strength, if I can & shall take some work with me. Copious notes on Epacrideae I have sent to the press,2 but I fear they will not be printed in time for the August mail.

Let me hope that you received Box 32 all right. It was sent in the beginning of this month by the "Sussex" It contained

(Also a fruit specimen of Dracophyllum Milligani (to be returned) & for Prof Oliver a box with Malachite [& Lasur] &c —.

I sent, while so ill, the Epacris packages off without revising them anew and working in lately received addenda. However you will find that the species have to be reduced to 7 or 8 (incl. Lysinema pungens) I have to some extent remodelled both capsular & drupaceaous Epacrideae, as regards generic characters, reducing the number of genera much.

I have your acknowledgement of the box 30 by the Great Britain, but not yet of the "Wellesley" Box shipped in the beginning of April = Box 31.

I anticipate the Monopetaleae will occupy fully the 4th vol, Epacrideae, Verbenaceae, (Myoporinae) and Goodeniaceae being large orders & many small ones besides having to be provided for, not to speak of a respectable assemblage of Stylideae. It would be better to keep these plants by themselfes, even if the volume should not be so large as vol II & to reserve all Monochlamydeae for vol. V, the Proteaceae requiring it half alone, & then Thymeleae, Santalaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Laurineae all requiring a good deal of room. If providence grants me renewed strenght I will push on once more vigorously the material for you.

Your regardful

Ferd Mueller.
