To Frederick Standish   24 November 1867

Melbourne bot. Garden

24/11/67

Allow me, dear Capt Standish, to mention that the Cottage at the Yarra near Jollimont road, will very much require a coat of paint to its verandah and perhaps some green coloring to its fences prior to the visit of H.R.H.1 to my northern ground, where the free banquet is to be held. You cannot imagine what a dismal object this cottage is, when seen from the summit of my rise, and as I hope to conduct the Prince there to enjoy the commanding view, I trust you will pardon, that I bring this matter concerning the unsightly cottage under your friendly consideration.

your very regardful

Ferd. Mueller2

His Royal Highness Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh.
Standish minuted on 25 November 1867: 'Referred to Mr Hare. I thought we no longer occupied this cottage?' See also M to F. Standish, 30 November 1867 (in this edition as 67-11-30a), in which M apologized for writing to Standish about the cottage.
