To Richard Kippist   12 March 1868

Melbourne bot

Garden 12/3/68.

It affords me much pleasure to introduce, dear Mr. Kippist, an other worthy candidate for the fellowship of the L.S.,1 namely the author of this very excellent and practical memoir on the Bombyx Cynthia.2

Mr. Charl Brady is a merchant in Sydney.3

With regardful salutations

Your Ferd. von Mueller

Linnean Society, London.
Brady (1868). The Linnean Society has a copy of the pamphlet in Opuscula Zoologica 9, and in the same volume a copy of 'Silk. (By Charles Brady F.L.S.)', a 25-page item without its publication details recorded, but annotated ‘From Dr G Bennet’.
No certificate of election for Brady can be found. A card index of Fellows and Nominees at the Linnean Society includes a card for Brady, Charles: ‘elected [sic; almost certainly an error for ‘proposed’] 12/3/1868. Never appeared in lists presumed did not qualify.’ The only evidence at the Linnean Society that supports the view that he was elected FLS is the use of the postnominals in the undated article on 'Silk' (see above), which Walker (1878) lists as ‘Silk. By Chas. Brady, F.L.S. Sydney, 1871. 8vo. Pamph. pp. 25’.
