From Ferdinand von Mueller to James Hector   29 Mar 1868

29/3/68

In examining the Verbenaceae along with other Monopetaleae, dear Dr Hector, for the 4th vol of the Austr Flora,1 I find my observation made in 1857 quite correct, namely that Teucridium is to be subjoined to Spartothamnus, an Austr genus (Queensland) [strangely] placed in Myoporineae I have called Teucridium parvifol[ium] = Spartothamnus Hookeri. Have you any well ripened fruit? If so you could much oblige.

With regardful salutation

Ferd. von Mueller

Bentham (1863-78); Verbenaceae were included in vol, 5 (1870), pp. 31-70. Bentham on p. 56, cited B68.03.04, p. 153 for where M pointed out that Spartothamnus was properly a Verbenaceous genus. Bentham, however, gave reasons for not accepting M's view that Teucridium parvifolia was a Spartothamnus.

In M to W. Hooker, 6 April 1857 (in this edition as 57-04-06a), under Verbenaceae, M wrote that he had added an East-Australian plant to J. Hooker's New Zealand Teucridium, also reported in B58.05.01, p. 140. However, no statement that it was a Spartothamnus has been found before he made point in M to H. Hooker, 25 December 1864 (in this edition as 64-12-25b).

MS annotations probably by Hector: 'Recd & Entd 14.4.68' and 'Ansd'.
