From Ferdinand von Mueller to Frederick Barlee   8 Apr 1868

Melbourne bot. Garden,

8/4/68.

Suddenly an apportunity has arisen, dear and honorable Sir, to send a case with plants direct to Perth.1 Thus I have despatched to you a number of prominently useful plants, all of which are likely to thrive about Swan-River. If there not already exist pines in some variety, you many find those now sent, eligible for the decoration of the ground of some of your public buildings. The plants should be taken out of the pots and planted at once during the genial autumnal weather and it will be needful to place around them rather densely a lot of branches of any kind, in order that the plants may be protected against winds and sudden changes of the temperature.2

With regardful salutation

your

Ferd. von Mueller

On [illegible date], Barlee minuted: 'Will the Collectors of Customs be good eno' to have the case herein attended to carefully landed and forwarded to Perth without delay? Please to return the letter.' An officer named Worsley Clifton replied on 4 May: 'No vessel appears to be named. If the case of Plants is on board the "H Nicholson" I will endeavour to get it up to Perth tomorrow & if in any other vessel that may arrive from Melbourne I will not fail to attend to this memo.' Barlee added the same day: 'Let a copy of this list be given to Murray the Gardener with a copy of the directions in Dr Müellers letter marked " " in pencil, and see that he keeps a look out for the case and at once attend to the directions.' 'R.P.' annotated the file on the next day: 'Done'.
