To Joseph Hooker 1    20 May 1868

20/5/68

I think by last mail I mentioned, dear Dr Hooker, that I had given a kind of promise to supply sooner or later some plants for the Brit. Museum.2 You are aware, that I hold the view of its being more important to have all the Great collections rather at Kew; still it seems that to many metropolitan workers the collections of the Brit. Mus. are a real boon. Now as long as the Museum has a phytographic branch I feel morally bound to support it, and the thought has arisen, that Mr Carruthers might pick out of the collections sent by me on loan a specimen of all such species as the Brit Museum stand in need of, provided there are available duplicates, so as not to break the series of forms and localities. Before I however write to Mr Bennett I wish to consult you, in order that any such arrangement may not involve troubles at Kew. This months mail brought no letter from you and Mr Bentham.

with regardful salutation

your

Ferd von Mueller
