You asked me several times to publish my intended monography of Eucalypts at an early period. I would gladly do so, as I have much material for such a purpose, but lithographic work is here so costly, that I can with my very slender departmental means (the vote for publication is reduced to ⅓ of its former extent) not think of the matter any more; and when I had to pay privately something like £60.– in preventing even Harveys magnificent work1 from being returned to Europe, I cannot hope that any Eucalyptus illustrations would be more appreciated. So, unless private fortune smiles on me yet, it is not possible to get the Eucalypts illustrated, as far as I can see, here, with local means. We are too young & have still too much to do with building our towns, villages, roads & bridges.

Dated to 1869 and correspondent inferred on the basis of G. Bentham to M, 21 December 1868. The content is consistent with the economy measures of the Victorian Government towards the end of 1868; see M to J. Grant, 3 November 1868 (in this edition as 68-11-03a).
