Sir,

I am directed by the Governor to inform you, — with reference to your letter addressed to His Grace the Duke of Buckingham & Chandos,1 — that His Grace has requested that his thanks should be conveyed to you for the branchlets of the tree which you wish should be named after His Grace,2 and that you should be informed that His Grace has no objection to his name being given to this Tree.

Manners-Sutton, 10 September 1868 (in this edition as 68-09-10a), which was accompanied by the branchlets referred to, and forwarded with despatch 144, 5 October 1868 (National Archives, London, CO 309/88, Victoria, Original correspondence, Despatches June-December 1868, ff. 457-8), enclosure to despatch no. 144, 5 October 1868. The assent to the request was given in the Secretary of State's despatch 108, 4 December 1869, draft in CO 309/88, ff. 456-7. Buckinghamia was erected (B. celsissima) in advance of the consent being received, in B68.12.02, pp. 247-8.
