From Ferdinand von Mueller to Henry C. Manners-Sutton   1 Mar 1869

1/3/69.

It is very kind of you, dear Mr Manners-Sutton, to inform me of his Excellency's1 friendly intention, to forward a copy of my letter of acknowledgment for recent distinction to her Majesty's Home Government.

Anticipating the Governor's concurrence in my adressing the Duke of Buckingham I took the liberty of forwarding this morning a letter to his Grace2 with such other letters, which his Excellency allows me monthly to send through your Office.

Pray express to Sir Henry my best thanks for all consideration shown me, as I must mainly adscribe to his Excellency's condescending favor, that the new honor was so auspiciously conferred on me.3 Should H.R.H.4 feel pleasure to visit also during his stay among us this time the Garden, I would feel greatly indebted, if I had private information a day before, with a view of avoiding the possibility of being away from the ground to receive the Prince.

With much regard

yours

Ferd. von Mueller.

The Governor, Sir Henry Manners-Sutton.

M had been appointed a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (H. C. Manners-Sutton to M, 20 February 1869).
