To Henry C. Manners-Sutton   25 May 1869

Melbourne bot Garden

25/5/69.

I owe my excuse, dear Mr Manners-Sutton, to his Excellency for not attending yesterday, the levee. Since seven weeks I am suffering from a deepseated bronchial catarrh, which has not yielded yet to any treatment. Under this affliction I have to observe the utmost caution and to avoid all exposure to the cold air, and I shall be obliged to proceed for a while to Queensland when the most urgent work of the season has passed, unless indeed I should get better before. With my inhered tendency to phthisis I cannot be sufficiently cautious. I need scarcely say that as a dignitary of the British Crown I was particularly eager to pay my homage yesterday.

With best regards

Ferd. von Mueller1
