Treasury Melbourne

12 June 1869

Sir

I have the honor to refer to the proposal made by you at a recent interview to go on with the earthworks at the Botanic Gardens at your own expense to the extent of Two hundred pounds (£200) provided you had the assurance of the Honorable the Treasurer that the money would be included in the estimates for the current year and refunded to you.

I am to express the Treasurer's recognition of the spirit in which you have made this offer but to state that he is unable to give the assurance required.

I have the honor to be

Sir,

Your most obedient Servant

Under Treasurer

The Director of the Botanic Garden
