From Ferdinand von Mueller to James McKean   16 Nov 1869

Melbourne Botan. Garden 16/11/69

Sir

I have the honor to solicit, that you will be pleased to sanction the transfer of the sum of £23.10/- from the vote for Travelling Expenses to that for Transit & Incidental Expenses, the balance available from the latter vote having proved insufficient to meet the outlays under that item likely to be incurred till the end of the year.

The whole vote for Publishing of Works having been left untouched this year, I have the honor to request of you, to render out of this the sum of £94.‑ available for wages, the wages fund being considerably overdrawn, partly in consequence of the extra work caused by the drought in the earlier part of the year, and partly through the great extra calls on the labor of the whole establishment during the many months, while the excavations at the lake and the formation of the flood-dam were proceeded with.

The remaining £56.- of the vote for Publishing of Works I would be glad to expend on Stores, as the ordinary Store Vote in this exceptional year was utterly insufficient to cover the requirements of the Department.

I have the honor to be

Sir

Your obedient servant

Ferd. von Mueller.

Gov Botanist and Director of the botanic Garden

The Honorable

the President of the Board of Land & Works1

McKean minuted his approval for M's requests on 22 November 1869 and M was informed on 26 November that 'the transfers in question have been sanctioned by His Excellency the Gov in Council'. M returned the file on 26 November 'with best thanks'.
