From Ferdinand von Mueller to Ronald Gunn   11 Sep 1870

Melbourne bot Garden,

11/9/70

In the Flora Tasmanica occurs a remark, dear Mr Gunn, that the fruits, of which you sent as likely belonging to Amphibolis zosterifolia (or Ruppia antarctica Labill), were probably referable to Posidonia australis.1This seems to have been the cause, that Dr Ascherson very recently in Becaris italian giornale2 combined my Amphobolis zosterifolia with Posidonia australis. I found only once a single fruit of Amphibolis, very similar certainly to that of Posidonia australis, which latter plant I found abundantly in fruit at King Georges Sound in 1867. May I now ask of you to see whether you have in your collection left any fruit specimens for comparison with my plants, to clear up any errors. I may remark, that in the 6th vol. of the Fragmenta I rejected the name Posidonia in favor of the older generic name Caulinia.3

With my best wishes for your health & happiness

Ferd. von Mueller
