From Ferdinand von Mueller to Edmund FitzGibbon   4 Jan 1871

Melbourne bot. Garden

4/1/71

Let me convey through you, dear Mr Fitzgibbon, my best thanks to his Worship the Mayor for his attentive Kindness of sending me the seeds of the Sarracenia for the garden.1 I have endeavoured to import living plants, but they perished on the voyage, and thus these curious plants are not yet in our collection.

These seeds shall [now] be carefully tried, but as it is so extremely difficult to rear here any plants, which occur naturally on mossy and springy bogs I will send half the seeds to the Director of the botanic Garden of Hobarton to sow them on rocky springs at Mount Wellington

With best regards to the worthy Mayor and your self

Ferd. von Mueller

The Sarracenia requires a cold clime, so it will do well on Mt Wellington and anywhere in the Austral. Alps.
