To James McCulloch   24 January 1871

24/1/71.

Memorandum

The Director of the bot. Garden in compliance with the Undersecretary's request1 begs to submit a statement of the present remuneration of the employees under his control. Some reduction in the scale of payment was contemplated by the Director at the time when the 8 hours system came into force, and again when subsequently the number of the employees was considerably reduced, but in consequence of the losses of the employees at the time of deferred payments and out of other considerations afterwards, the proposed reductions could not yet take place.

Ferd. von Mueller,

Director
