From Ferdinand von Mueller to Ferdinand von Krauss   26 Jan 18711

Melbourne im botanisch. Garten

26/1/71

Stets dankbar Ihr

Ferd von Mueller

Melbourne Botanic Garden,

26 January 1871.

From the enclosed letter from General Sir William Denison4 (formerly Governor General of Australia, later Governor of Madras) you will see, noble Sir, that your friend's conchological collection, which you offered for sale, would probably be purchased by a scientific institute in England. It would therefore be best, if the owner now negotiated directly with the General.

There are a lot of original drawings of animals of south-eastern Australia with Dr Sonder, which a talented lady, Mrs Calvert,5 gave to me. These paintings are accompanied by original notes, and the whole would perhaps be suitable for use piece by piece in a popular scientific journal. I have asked Dr Sonder to send the lot to you. Perhaps the pictures, if framed, could serve for the beautification of your Museum.

I have good use for the publications of your natural history society6 for exchange, especially with Tasmania.

Recently (a few weeks ago) another consignment of curiosities for your Museum was once again dispatched, and already some divers items from Tasmania &c. &c. are again standing in readiness. So you see, that I keep your institute in friendly remembrance.

It would be extremely regrettable, if the things I sent in April of last year,7 especially the many specimens in alcohol, had not arrived, because I could not replace them.

What pleases me extraordinarily, is that the natural history objects from me are now undergoing specific examinations there, as something new might always be found among them.

I simply cannot comprehend, that I have neglected so far to send you a fully grown Dromaius8 both as a skin and a skeleton.

Always gratefully your

Ferd. von Mueller.

The sum for the new foundation will be sent shortly.

MS annotation by Krauss: 'empf. d. 21. April. Rep. mit Barontitel d. 10. Juli 71' [Received 21 April 1871. Replied with the title of Baron 10 July 1871]. Letter not found. A note from G. von Silcher to Krauss, 10 July 1871 (Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde, Stuttgart), reported that M's appointment as an hereditary baron had been approved, and Krauss evidently wrote immediately to M using his new title.
