From Marcus Clarke   7 February 1871

7th Feb. [187]1.1

Sir

I have the honor by direction of the above Committee to request you to assure Mr Hoffmann that the Committee regret that he is about to take his departure for Europe.2 The Committee hope that something like a catalogue or list may be available of what has been done.

The Committee require no more wood labels, as the labels hitherto supplied came off as fast as put on, and suggest that cardboard labels tacked on would answer the purpose equally well

The Committee can incur no further expense until what has been done has been listed and arranged

The Committee think that a great bulk of what has been contributed has been contributed by Messrs Felton Grimwade and others

The Committee request that some of the duplicate printed labels be sent in without delay, in order that they can be pasted on cardboard and fastened on.

The Committee beg to refer Dr Von Mueller to their repeated letters on the subject of Dr Hoffmann's salary, and to inform him finally that they cannot pay pay3 for an expenditure which they did not incur.

If Dr Von Mueller will communicate with Mr Newbery the Scientific Superintendent that gentleman will be happy to carry out his views.

The accounts for 2½ doz 20 oz bottles are approved by the Committee.

I have the honor to be

Sir

Your obedient Servant

Marcus Clarke
