From Ferdinand von Mueller to James McCulloch   10 Feb 1871

Melbourne botan. Garden,

10./2/71

Sir

I have the honor to bring under your favorable consideration, that Overseer Wilson of the Industrial Schools performs the duty of bringing and fetching the boys to and from the botanic Garden, being thereby necessitated to walk four times daily over the ground. This is such a great additional tax on the time of that Officer as to induce me to recommend a gratuity to be given to him, and if this proposition meets with your approval, I would beg to suggest the sum of five pounds Sterling as appropriate up to this time, and that such sum may be paid out of the incidental fund of the botanic Garden.

I have the honor to be, Sir, your obedient servant

Ferd. von Mueller,

Director botan. Garden.

The honorable The Chief Secretary1

On 14 February 1871, the Chief Secretary, James McCulloch, minuted: 'Certainly not', and the file was forwarded to M on the same day. T. Ware to M, 24January 1872, requested that this letter be returned to the Chief Secretary's office. M did so on 16 January.
