The first column contains authority numbers, issued in response to M to J. McCulloch, 23 January 1871. The salary and wages amounts in the tabulation are the sums voted by Parliament when the supplementary estimates for 1870 were passed on 22 November 1870, Votes and proceedings of the Legislative Assembly, second session 1870, vol 1, p. 41). However, the other sums are half those shown as voted, and half those stated by M in his request for authority numbers.
