To James McCulloch   24 April 1871

Melbourne botanic Garden

24/4/71

Sir

I have the honor to inform you, that for some time past a preacher, connected with the City Mission, has taken his position near the Iron bridge of the botanic Garden within ground under my control, to adress the public on Sunday afternoons. I have not seen any harm arise out of this, but as the press has taken public notice now of the fact,1 I beg to bring this under your notice and await your instructions on the subject. I have the honor to be your obedient servant

Ferd. von Mueller

Direct. botan. Garden.

The honorable the Chief Secretary.

An editorial in the Argus , 24 April 1871, p. 4, was directed at ‘the nuisance of outdoor preaching’. See also the reply from Robert Hamilton, Hon. Sec. of the City Mission, Argus , 25 April 1871, p. 7.
