To the Borough of Castlemaine1    28 June 1871

Botanic Garden

Melbourne, 28th June 1871

Sir

Allow me to ask whether you have any means of obliging me by ascertaining the approximate quantity of wood, sold for fuel, in your township. It occurs to me, that probably you have some wood market where information may be obtained; also perhaps that tolls exist, where some sort of record is kept of the number of woodcarts passing. I am anxious to learn the approximate quantity used in 1870, to append statistic notes on fuel supply to a public document which I am about to issue.2

With obedience

yours
