William Ferguson.
In M to James McCulloch, 15 June 1871, M complained that the 'Forest Inspector' was corresponding directly with the government. Ferguson evidently submitted his report direct, rather than through M to whom he was technically responsible. In W. Odgers to M, 27 July 1871 (in this edition as 71-07-21b), M was told Ferguson's report had been returned and Ferguson told 'to forward it in the regular official manner'. The report was re-submitted to the Chief Secretary's Office on 1 August, presumably by M, but no covering letter from M has been found. It was referred to the Crown Lands office on 9 July 1871. Ferguson appears to have questioned the necessity of corresponding through M, for on 1 August he wrote to the Chief Secretary 'with refce to mode of transmission of his Report' (No. 9734, vol. 1871 Z, VPRS 1168, Public Record Office, Victoria).
Letter not found; item is a register entry only, registered on 27 July 1871.
