From Ferdinand von Mueller to George Story   5 July 1871

Melbourne bot Garden

5/7/71.

This day, dear Dr Story, I have forwarded to your Hobarton Adress a case full of plants.

Please put the Cinchonas into a ferntree valley (just into the wild bush) to let them have their chance, in a sheltered position, where no frost occurs. I believe the plant would become naturalized on such spots

The Glumaceae from your locality will still come in time, as I have made hardly any progress with phytographic work since the last 20 month, the confusion in my department leaving me no spare time

It is sad, that one of your staple produce such as the Apple, should have suffered so much, as it must affect the income of whole districts materially for the time

It was unfortunately forgotten to send any Rhubarb in your case.

Do algae drift up on your shores? If so, can you oblige by drying without washing & pressing a lot of them on open boards or shelves and send them roughly packed to me. I can prepare them here.

With best regards

Ferd. von Mueller

The Nut of Macadamia is delicious. I am much interested in the Cinchona experiment1
