From Ferdinand von Mueller to William Guilfoyle   14 Aug 1871

Melbourne bot. Garden

14/8/71.

It was highly pleasing to me, dear Mr Guilfoyle, to receive through your fathers1 mediation yesterday the case with plants, which you so attentively collected.

It contains several northern species, new to N. S. Wales, besides several rarities. I enclose for instance Maundia triglochinoides and Petermannia cirrhosa.2 Both are extremely rare and as yet so imperfectly known, that I shall have to work out anew these two genera of mine from good flowering and fruiting specimens. For this perhaps through your kindness the means will be given. I am particularly interested also in your Cathartocarpus. If indigenous it is new to your colony. For my Eryngium expansum you have given us a new locality.

The plant, to which you attribute emetic properties, is Haloragis tetragyna or an allied species (no ripe fruit on your specimen) This interesting indication must be followed up. The Pithecolobium is P. Tozerii F.v.M. I had it first from the late Mr Tozer.

It is a late night hour and I am very tired; so excuse me with a promise that your plants shall not be left unutilized.

With best regards

Ferd. von Mueller
