In a Victorian Parliamentary debate on 23 August 1871, the Treasurer said that William Ferguson, who had been given responsibility for the operation of the Botanic Gardens, and with whom M was at loggerheads, was to be removed and returned to the Lands Department as promptly as possible. The announcement was reported in the Melbourne press (e.g. Argus, 24 August 1871, p. 6), and M reported it to at least some of his correspondents; see M to J. Hooker, 29 August 1871.
