From Ferdinand von Mueller to Henry Ayers   8 Feb 1872

Melbourne bot. Garden

8/2/72.

Sir

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 2. inst,1 intimating your intention to cause the country between the River Finke2 and Lake Eyre to be searched for any possible vestiges of the party of the explorer Leichhardt.

Allow me to thank you for the very handsome manner, in which you have instituted this measure, and let me hope, that while it will contribute to disclose the fate of the lost explorers, it will add also to the knowledge of a new and important tract of country for the advancement of settlement and geography.3

I have the honor to be, Sir,

your obedient servant

Ferd. von Mueller M.D.

The honorable the Chief Secretary &c &c

Adelaide.
