Excellenz.

Sr. Excellenz

dem Freiherrn von Waechter,

Minister des königlichen Hauses

und für auswärtige Angelegenheiten

Melbourne, Botanic Garden,

Excellency,

It is my honourable duty to acknowledge the receipt of Your Excellency's kind letter of 8 January this year4 and to express my deeply felt gratitude for the great interest you deigned to display towards me. I am truly proud of the high privilege granted to me by the Throne of Württemberg, and of being permitted to bear such a noble coat of arms which, I hope, my descendants will bear for many generations to come. The choice of the details of the coat of arms was left entirely to Your Excellency's discretion and I accept the suggested proposals with deepest gratitude, understanding that personal decorations cannot be passed on to descendants; and I am pleased that the highly important Eucalyptus tree can be incorporated into the coat of arms as an emblem of my work. I am obliged to the Royal Herald of Arms for the trouble and knowledgeable circumspection that he had the kindness to apply to my cause.

May I seize this opportunity while expressing my thanks to you, noble Sir, to be permitted to enquire whether you will grant me the pleasure to attach Your Excellency’s celebrated name to a newly discovered mountain or river in Australia as a memorial that will be as permanent as the present creation?

With gratitude and esteem, your devoted

Ferd. von Mueller.5

Minister of the Royal House
