[...] Letter to the

Director of the botanic Garden,

Dr Baron Ferdinand von Mueller, Esq.,

Melbourne.

dated [30] July 1872.

Sir,

I have the honour to inform you that, after His Royal Majesty had deigned to decree it,8 I had your baronial certificate, well packed, dispatched to your address at the same time as this present letter.

The Herald of Arms having given due consideration to your wishes in the design of your coat of arms, I may assume accordingly that these were executed according to your wishes.

The nomination of a fee, according to the regulations for these fees of 23 June 1828 was, under the existing circumstances, dispensed with; where the other expenditures are concerned, however, their settlement according to the usual tradition in cases of an elevation in rank is still outstanding, and you will, Sir, find the relevant information on this in the enclosed letter from the Directorate of the Chancellery of the Royal Ministry for Foreign Affairs.9

With my thanks, Sir, for the expressions of your kindly sentiments in your letter of 27 March this year, I have the honour etc.

Initial illegible.

See J. von Wachter to Karl I, King of Württemberg, 8 July 1872 (in this edition as M72-07-08).

See Württemberg Ministry for Foreign Affairs to M, 30 July 1871 (in this edition as 71-07-30a).

Initial illegible, however, it is evident from the context that the letter is from Wächter.

There is a marginal annotation: 'NB: Für den Fall dass Se Excellenz das Anerbieten Pathenstelle an einem australischen Berg oder einem Flusse nicht anzunehmen gesonnen sind, dürfte dieser [Passus] wohl am besten mit Stillschweigen zu übergehen seyn’ [Should your Excellency not intend to accept the offer of acting as godfather to an Australian mountain or river, this passage is best passed over in silence]. In M to J. Wächter, 27 March 1872 (in this edition as 72-03-27a), M had offered to have a geographical feature named after Wächter.

An attached memorandum under the same date details the fee due, varying from 6 to 20 Ducats depending on the circumstances of the person who has received an elevation in rank, as the customary gift to the staff of the Chancellery office.

Letter not found. MS is a draft copy.
