From Ferdinand von Mueller to Jacob Agardh   7 Aug 1872

Melbourne im bot Garten

7/8/72.

Melbourne Botanic Garden,

7 August 1872.

I have sent you, noble friend, a Cycas trunk (of Cycas angulata), many years old, in living state, by the ship Yorkshire,1 which will probably grow fronds again just as easily as the old trunks of Encephalartos from Natal and Kaffirland, when they are brought under glass and given bottom heat.

I would advise to smoke the trunk well before placing it in the glasshouse, to destroy any larvae and eggs of boring beetles or other insects.

My agents, Mess Blackith & Co, have been instructed to send you the trunk free of charge.

I have met frequently with your excellent friend Chevalier Dr Christophersen.2

With respectful devotion

your Ferd. von Mueller.

In case of early frost you may perhaps have the opportunity to ask a friend in London to winter the trunk for you in his glasshouse until spring.

Yorkshire sailed for London on 8 August 1872 (Argus, 9 August 1872, p. 4).

Wilhelm Christopher Christophersen (1832-1913), while Consul for Norway and Sweden in Buenos Aires, visited Vic and SA during 1872-3 (see, for example, South Australian register, 24 September 1872, p. 5, and Age, 18 July 1873, p. 2).
