From William Woolls to Ferdinand von Mueller   [1873]

My dear Doctor,

L. pungens1 or Woollsia "by the favour of Baron Mueller," is abundantly in flower just now near the coast in the neighbourhood of Port Jackson.2 The flowers are generally white, but sometimes pinkish, & when fresh they have a sweet scent! It does not occur in the Parramatta district, but we have it again on the Blue Mountains. This is the case with several of the same family. They occur near the coast, & then disappear until you reach the mountains.

In haste

yours most sincerely

W. Woolls

Text of postscript has been cut off the MS.

MS found with an undated specimen of Woollsia pungens (MEL 2187194). M erected Woollsia (W. pungens) in B73.06.03, pp. 52, 55, distinguishing this from Lysinema RBr; MS is therefore dated to the latter half of 1873 as the earliest date when Woolls could have referred to the genus in the way he did.
