From Ferdinand von Mueller to William Guilfoyle   18 Feb 1873

Melbourne bot Garden

18/2/73.

You have agreably surprised me, dear Mr Guilfoyle, by sending me the fruit of Amorphospermum antilogum,1 a new genus of Sapoteae, established by me in 1870, as now a surmise, that the genus (with its only known species) might extend to N. S. Wales has been verified.

Mr Bentham in the 4th volume of our work2 united this plant with Sersalisia serecea RBr, with which it has much resemblance in flower and leaves, but not in fruit. The latter is so remarkable in its interior structure and its germination is so peculiar, that I gave for these reasons the generic and specific names. A good supply of the seeds would be of value for botanic gardens in Europe, as the germination (quite exceptional in Sapoteae) can then there be watched

I shall be glad to see your new Orchid and any other rarities, which your experienced eyes may descry.

Regardfully your

Ferd. von Mueller.
