From Ferdinand von Mueller to Julius Haast   20 Feb 1873

Melbourne im bot Garten

20/2/73

Melbourne Botanic Garden,

20 February 1873.

It may not as yet have come to your knowledge, dear friend, that I have named one of the highest points of the MacDonnell Range in Central Australia1 Haast's Bluff in your honour. This elevated point is about 4000 feet above sea level. It has usually been left to me to name the new localities, as I proposed the plan of this undertaking by Giles and largely supported it out of my private means. You also see that, although I do not have much spare time for writing, I do not forget those who have shown me kindness.

Always your

Ferd. von Mueller.

You will have read Giles's printed journal in the newspapers recently.2
