From Ferdinand von Mueller to August Petermann   27 Mar 1873

27/3/73

Melbourne Botanic Garden,

27 March 1873.

With this month's mail, noble friend, I am sending you the map of Giles's last expedition,1 on which you will also find the little river delineated that I dedicated to you.2 With great difficulty I have collected £350 from befriended colonists for the further support of Giles's expeditions, and the Government of South Australia has granted £250 in recognition of the explorations and surveys already carried out by Giles in their territory, a kindness that I requested from Sir Henry Ayres, the Premier there, personally. So Giles will depart again, — though admittedly with scanty means, — and will first of all explore Mount Olga,3 then determine the western limits of Lake Amadeus, and finally attempt to reach the sources of the Murchison River.4 It has been rather unexpectedly determined from rock samples at hand from the MacDonnell Ranges5 that the predominant metamorphic rock formations there bear gold. Mr Giles has also discovered some completely new plants that will be described in the 8th volume of my Fragmenta.6

I am also sending you with this mail the diary and maps of Hann, who now has provided a fine contribution to the geography of the farthest north-east of Australia.7

Could you be so kind as to let me have a few more copies of your so complete little universal map of Australia?8 You will see from Giles's diaries that he used it in Central Australia. I often have good use for a copy.

I am gratefully obliged to you for your constant kindness that in the midst of your multifarious duties you think of me, for nearly every mail brings me an informative publication from you.

With respectful devotion

your

Ferd. von Mueller.

May your noble efforts for the exploration of the North Pole and its vicinity be crowned with complete success!

M described several species in Volume 8, and more in Volume 9, in their appropriate systematic contexts. For a list of species associated with the exploration, see B73.04.01; B75.04.08 contains a list of plants collected on this and other journeys by Giles, with references to the Fragmenta.

In 1872 William Hann led an expedition to explore the interior of the Cape York Peninsula, Qld. In Petermanns geographische Mittheilungen, vol. 20, 1874, p. 233, Petermann summarized Hann (1873), a reprint of the 1873 Queensland Parliamentary paper, 'Copy of the diary of the Northern Expedition under the leadership of Mr. William Hann'. This had an accompanying map, for which see https://nla.gov.au/nla.obj-232481753/view (accessed 16 August 2018).
