Melbourne im bot Garden

23/4/73

With ehrender Ergebenheit der Ihre

Ferd. von Mueller

Melbourne Botanic Garden,

23 April 1873.

It is really kind of you, noble friend, that you undertook the laborious task of examining the Chatham algae so soon,1 and it is pleasing to see that, as a reward, various species have turned out to be new.

After six or seven months of rest my Cycas is now suddenly growing lovely leaves. Thus, should yours not show any signs of life after a year, I shall send you another trunk. In any case, I have now proven that Cycas plants many years old can still be transported live.

A young officer of the Guard from Stockholm, a friend of your son, is here at present for health reasons. He has recovered well. His name is Reinhold Blomstedt.2 He will have to leave us again soon; I regret this as he will get back home just before winter. He is a splendid person.

I shall be very happy to receive your bryologist here and to show him the best places for mosses in this area.3 But Australia is extraordinarily poor in mosses compared to New Zealand.

With respectful devotion your

Ferd. von Mueller.
