From Ferdinand von Mueller to George Story   8 July 1873

Melbourne bot Museum1

8/7/73,

In working on some of your Glumaceae, dear Dr Story, for the 7th & 8th volume of the Australian Flora,2 I came across the enclosed fibre from a grass, with which you tied some plants in your collection. I should like to have a sample of this fibre for paper material and the Grass (perhaps a Stipa or Dichelachne) which yields it for naming. In all likelihood a new export might arise to Tasmania, if this fibre could be brought fully into notice of merchants and Manufacturers3

your regardful

Ferd. von Mueller.

Bentham (1863-78), vol. 7. No 8th volume was published; the material on which M was working was dealt with in vol. 7.

Story evidently told M that the plant was a Stipa, but flowering specimens were unavailable; see M to G. Story, 18 August 1873.
