From Ferdinand von Mueller to Vincenzo Cesati   8 Sep 1873

Melbourne

8/9/73

I was glad to learn, dear Baron Cesati, that the Todea reached you safely,1 and trust that under your able care it will reestablish itself fully.

As you enquire about acotyledonar plants, I would mention, that I should be happy to send you any from here and consult you especially on many fungi, as you have worked on them so long and so gloriously. Will you kindly inform me, in what manner I can serve you best. As the Cotyledonar plants of Australia will be brought to a close in the 7th vol next year,2 I intend to devote 2 or 3 years specially to the study of the Australian Agamous plants. I have however examined already all Filices and allied plants (about 200 species) carefully.

Can you shed any light on Tenore's Genus Donzellia?

With regardful salutation,

dear Baron,

your

Ferd. von Mueller

The Todea was entirely a private donation of my own; so you are under no obligation for it to the Government here.

The sixth volume of Bentham (1863-78) was published on 23 September 1873 but the final volume was delayed until March 1878 (TL2). Bentham gave priority to completing vol. 2, part 2, of Bentham & Hooker (1862-83), which appeared in May 1876 (TL2); see for example G. Bentham to M, 9 September 1874 (in this edition as 74-09-09a), and G. Bentham to M, 23 August 1875.
