The prints of the essai on the plants of the New Hebrides,1 dear Prof. Gray, came by a few hours too late into my hands for being forwarded by last months mail. So I send now a copy of them. I fear that I was unable to consult all your important memoirs on the S. Sea Islands plants, as I cannot within my means obtain all periodicals and works on your plants, and thus readily some essays may escape my notice. Would you do me the great Kindness of glancing over the essay, and should you find that I missed to consult any of your contributions to the volumes of the Academy, or any other of your valuable publications bearing on S. Sea Island plants, — would you then afford me your aid in directing my attention to the here wanting part of the literature of the S. Sea Islands. Perhaps even you would extend your generous goodness so far as to send the portions of your writing, which I ought to have referred to, as I intend to follow up this essay soon by an other on the plants of Samoa.2
