From Ferdinand von Mueller to Julius Haast   25 Feb 1874

Mount Emu Creek

25/2/74.

Mount Emu Creek,

25 February 1874.

On a journey into the mountain range west of Cape Otway,1 dear friend, I found a Wolffia today for the first time in Australia. The species of these genera differ externally from those of the genus Lemna (duck weed) in the absence of roots; in addition there are a number of internal anatomical characters that divide these genera. I am enclosing a few specimens of this Wolffia for you, and would like to ask you on occasion to watch for Lemnaceae in the swamps and ponds of your neighbourhood, as I cannot imagine that this family should be restricted to only 2 species, as we are led to believe by Dr Hooker's Manual.2

Regardfully your

Ferd. von Mueller.
