requisition.
The requisition was evidently approved because it was forwarded to the Government Printer's office on 28 March 1874.
HMS Challenger was on a world oceanographic research cruise. The ship arrived in Melbourne on 14 March 1874 and left on 1 April for Sydney. Moseley (1892), pp. 222-9 has more detail of the stay in Melbourne than Tizzard et al. (1885), i.e. vol 1, part 1 of Report on the scientific results of the voyage of H.M.S. Challenger during the years 1872-76 : … prepared under the superintendence of the late Sir C. Wyville Thomson ... and now of John Murray.
Letter not found; item is a register entry only, of a letter dated 26 March 1874.
