[Dr. F. V. Mueller has sent us another species, less temperate than the above, viz., E. rostratus,2 and I enclose a few seeds for Dr. Imthurn for an experiment in Tezpore. Dr. F. V. Mueller thinks that this is the best kind for tropical regions in India, and possibly Dr. Imthurn may be inclined to try it, and let us know bye and by with what results.]
Eucalyptus rostratus
Letter not found. For the text given here, see ‘Monthly Proceedings of the Society’, Journal of the Agricultural and Horticultural Society of India, 1874, p. xlii. The text appears in the proceedings for the meeting of 30 July 1874; the item is dated to June 1874 as the latest likely date that the seeds could have been sent, to be reported at this meeting. The comment was made by Sulpiz Kurz of the Royal Botanic Gardens, responding to a letter from Imthurn on the success of eucalypts in Tezpore.
E. rostratus not in APNI, but it is a name used by Cavanilles (1791-1801), vol. 4, pp. 23-4, when the species was described; see also the Real Jardín Botánico, Madrid, herbarium sheet, MA 475678.
